Annotation: Young Susy Clemens tells readers what her father Mark Twain is really like.  Through journal writings and some of Twain’s own writings Susy gives readers a view of life with a famous writer who is remarkably like a real dad.
Personal Reaction: This book is an enjoyable read.  Suzy’s point of view is humorous and is illustrated through an insert replica of her journal.  The illustrations reflect the time period of the late 1800’s.  This story could be used in teaching biographies or creative writing and English classes.  In light of the discussions today about the language in Huckleberry Finn, I found it interesting that the wife served as his editor to delete questionable passages!  The back pages provide a wealth of information for young readers with a timeline of Twain’s life and how to write a biography.  The family photograph at the end is especially poignant.
Illustration: The digitally enhanced drawing is set against a muted background. The illustrator is able to inject the humor and the unconventional behavior of this famous author.
Use of Media:  The line drawings are whimsical provide a true interpretation of the narrative reflective of a young person.
