Personal Reaction:  This book has a lot of relatable themes for children like being the new person, an outsider at school, isolation and boredom.  The main character is strong enough to know in which group she belongs and can become the natural leader.  The combination of relatable themes and graphic novel format makes this book a success.
Illustration:  The comic format, with its simple line drawing, makes it easy to interpret the storyline and follow the narrative.  The scene where Jane is in the school lunchroom for the first time depicts her real isolation and aloneness by portraying the main character darker and the rest of the cafeteria students in a contrasting lighter background tint..
Use of Media: black and white line drawings
Use of literary device:  Repetition is used when Jane expresses her feelings of being in her new school- I Hate It Here, I Hate It Here, I Hate It Here.
