Annotation: The story of Australian Annette Kellerman who overcame physical disabilities and forged a name and career through swimming and swimsuit design in the early 1900’s.
Personal Reaction:  What a wonderful inspiring story!  Until now, little has been know about how women’s swimwear went from heavy woolen cover all to slim and flattering and showing off women’s legs.  I loved the way Annette constantly went against the grain whether it was having weak legs and figuring a way to strengthening them to holding court in England when she was ordered to cover up.  This story is great for young girls who need encouragement to follow their passions no matter what life throws at them.  Good for physical education stories and teaching values.
Illustration: The illustrator uses vibrant colors to depict scenes from her real life and follow closely to the narrative.  I especially liked the scene as Annette dives all through the water every which way and invents water ballet.  The reader feels as if they are in the water with her.
Use of Media:  The illustrator uses bold patterns against vibrant colors to give the allusion of being in the water and depict scenes.  The artwork is accurate in illustrating the costuming and period details.
Use of literary device: The rhythm and flow of the storyline is reflected by the water scenes.
