Personal Reaction:  In school we learn the story historians want us to know.  In books like this we find the more fascinating back story of how it happened or the characters involved.  Unless you are an avid Revolutionary War fan the reader most likely never knew the name Henry Knox.  The author brings this man’s life and his invaluable assistance alive for the reader.  History buffs will love the back story and teachers will have a unique side bar for the history lessons.
Illustration: The colorful paintings depict the historical details and certainly the technical difficulty of the transporting of the artillery.  With the text being set in one page chapters there is plenty of artwork to create the visuals of the narrative.  Most interesting is the depiction of the arduous journey down from Fort Ticonderoga to Boston.
Use of Media: The acrylic painting on wood panels gives the illustrations a gauzy impressionist feel.
