Annotation: A stray dog survives many lives until she falls in the hands of the Russian military and becomes the first living animal in space.
Personal Reaction: I had difficulty with this book.  First the historical context was not terribly interesting and since I am a dog lover I was quite upset with the ending. That being said, I could see where this book could be used in history classes.  The text which is mostly dialogue could be used in a language arts class when discussing writing dialogue flow.  As a librarian I would be careful about which children I would recommend this book to and certainly give them a warning about the ending.  Any young person could mistake this book as a sweet story about a dog and expect a happy ending.  Even though the author does show the emotions
Illustration: The cartoon drawings and varied colors help to keep this title of keen interest to the reader’s eyes.  The depiction of the scientist’s interactions with the politicians and the tension of living in a communist regime is frequently reflected by the artist up close facial drawings and body postures.
Use of Media: Drawing with pen and coloring by another illustrator.
