Annotation: Poetry and art come together to illustrate nature’s survivors.  From the familiar squirrels and sharks to the lesser known dung beetles the reader is introduced to their survival with a poem on one page and a paragraph on the other.
Personal Reaction: This is an interesting book. Poetry is mixed with factual prose to instruct the reader about animals and plants that have survived extinction.  The explanations are written in a clear and simple narrative while the poetry is mixed with rhyming and unrhymed verse but always light and playful. The back matter has a glossary, author notes and illustrator notes.  Not only is this an excellent book for science instruction but also for creative writing and English classes.
Illustration: This artwork is clear and assists the narrative to provide a good visual context.  The front and back pieces depict a maze like image of evolution with the animals mentioned in the text highlighted when their life began and different geologic periods. Animals are depicted in their natural habitat.
Use of Media: The figures in the prints are outlined in black layered background coloring.
Use of Literary Device:  Some poetry is in rhyming couplets while other is unrhymed verse accompanied by light humor.
