Annotation: The author’s poem “Mood Indigo” is illustrated.  The poem honors her parents’ friends who were famous musicians, writers, politicians and civil rights advocates. The narrator is the author as a young child.
Personal Reaction: This title is a wonderful poem brought to life by the illustration. The book has multiple areas of study like poetry, history, social studies and family life discussions. The back matter gives short biographical sketches of the men named in the poem which is helpful to better place their place in history.
Illustration: The rich but simple oil colors set this poem to music and give the reader a lovely visual of a part of history rarely discussed. The depictions are full of warmth and reverence.
Use of Media:  The use of oil painting has created a real life portrait of a certain period in history.  I cannot imagine another medium that could bring the right amount of respect and honor visually that the poem conveys through words.
