Annotation: Twice in Henry’s slave life he suffers the pain of separation from family.  After the loss of his wife and child he decides, with the help of the Underground Railroad, to mail himself to freedom in a wooden crate.
Personal Reaction: This is a painfully true but inspiring story. There is an author’s note and small bibliography in the back matter.  This book would be good for history classes as well as personal character discussions with students.
Illustration:  With either full page or page and one half color pictures the reader is able to visualize the historical context along with the narrative.
Use of Media:  The actual trip in the box is depicted so well the reader can understand the will for freedom Henry possessed.
