Annotation: Ariel the mermaid yearns to live like humans.  She makes a trade for legs with the Sea Witch only to find that her wish is more complicated and she will need assistance from her other sea friends.
Personal Reaction: This edition of the classic fairy tale is somewhat harsher than other renditions.  There is more text versus illustration that might turn some readers away although the vocabulary is suitable for the age range.  Readers that have grown up with the Disney version might not like this.  If used in the classroom, the teacher will find it is a suitable version for transition to the real tale and initiation of discussions of values and consequences of choices.
Illustration: The soft watercolors of blues and greens set the tone for this sea world.  The pictures are often impressionist with the inserts of life both land and sea.
Use of Media: The full page watercolors are limited and do little to support the text and narrative.
